A WheelTug system consists of four main components: 1. Electric motors and related hardware in both nose wheels 2. Control electronics in the electronics bay 3. System controls in the cockpit 4. WheelTug Vision™ (WTV), a camera/sensor system These components enable the pilot of an aircraft to manoeuvre and drive the aircraft on the ground in any direction and both forward and backward. WheelTug can be installed on, retrofitted to, or removed from any aircraft in no more than two overnight sessions. The system is designed so that a WheelTug failure of any nature will not impede or delay aircraft operation insofar as an aircraft can always switch off its WheelTug and proceed on the ground with a tug and/or its engines. WheelTug10-28The WheelTug system enables aircraft to manoeuvre and taxi on the ground without running their engines or using tow tugs. This saves fuel, reduces engine and brake wear, eliminates current pushback risk and costs, and reduces the time aircraft spend on the ground. The primary savings are in reduced ground times, which improve aircraft utilisation rates and passenger comfort. Benefits will increase as procedures, schedules and other aspects of airport and airline operations integrate WheelTug. The system can be quickly retrofitted to existing aircraft and is fully removable.
